Your first thought would be to fold and you would be correct. Chances are someone has an Ace and are looking at top pair. They will probably come back strong with a very large bet. If you make the mistake of continuing, looking for that elusive straight that isn't smart poker because you don't have anywhere near the pot odds to call! But let's say you do anyway.


The turn reveals your elusive 7


You now are sitting with the nuts and win a large pot because the guy with the Aces is convinced he is holding the winning hand.


Clearly this wasn't smart play on your part however it worked out well. If you hadn't caught the 7 it would have cost you much to chase the straight. When you look back and analyze your play you should realize that although you won a large pot "this time" chances are that won't happen often. Learning to focus on the long term of playing poker rather than the actual results at the moment is key to winning.
