HAVING AN EXIT STRATEGY
Leaving The Door Open
Have you ever heard of the saying "when one door closes another opens". This is usually referring to various life experiences. That being said there are time when a door closes in a poker tournament and another opens. Players often worry about being blinded out of a tournament and may play cards that are detrimental just because they are the big blind. This isn't smart poker because eventually your luck will change and "another door will open" one that ensures you have a fighting chance in the hand.
Patience is a virtue in poker and there is something to be said for waiting for that right hand before making your move. Playing too loosely will only bring you the short stack in any tournament. Look for the best possible return on your investment into any pot.
If the cards aren't coming and believe me it happens to us all, it's time to plan your action for the tournament before it's too late. Sometimes the best plan is to go for it with an all-in. This move holds all the power at the table because you are either forcing the players to lay down decent hands or you are making your opponent call on a lot more than they bargained for and just might lose. Using this philosophy has its dangers as you might just bust your way right out of the tournament or cripple yourself.
However if you wait till the last minute to go all in and "pray for the poker gods to be king to you" you will kill any chance of adding more chips to the pot. You have put yourself in a position where your opponent knows you have no more chips and he might think twice about calling you.
End game is if you think you are going to be forced all-in then make sure it is on your terms. Don't be afraid to go out with a bang just make sure when you do you have a shot of winning!
